About

The Revolver Type Foundry publishes a variety of contemporary, modern and classical fonts for professional use.

Founded in 2017 by Lukas Schneider, the studio is based in the suburbs of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The Revolver Type Foundry has over a decade of experience working internationally in the fields of typeface design, font production, lettering, logotypes and foreign alphabets. Since a few years, Revolver Type have been developing groundbreaking tools to improve, simplify and streamline the design and production process of digital fonts. Two of these tools, LS Cadencer and LS Cadenculator, which are made for auto-spacing fonts, can be purchased from the Revolver Type Foundry webstore.

Lukas Schneider has published typefaces with a number of prestigious type foundries and has been commissioned to develop custom fonts for several design agencies. He studied graphic design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main, Germany and holds a Master’s degree in type design from The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, The Netherlands. He is also an alumnus of the Plantin Institute, Antwerp, Belgium where he achieved the highest distinction for his diploma on the Expert class Type Design under the tutelage of Frank E. Blokland.

In 2015, Blokland and Schneider worked in collaboration, combining their extensive knowledge of Renaissance foundry production and digital capabilities to produce a new spacing system comprised of two software tools for the auto-spacing of fonts in editors Glyphs App and RoboFont. The tools LS Cadencer and LS Cadenculator can be purchased from the Tools section.

A WORD ON THE NAME

Our name is partly inspired by a rich background in print and editorial design, and a tongue-in-cheek reference to the revolutions and other revolving elements found in these fields. For example, the German Revolverblatt is a charmingly quaint term for a tabloid paper with big lurid headlines, often set in spectacular type. Public libraries used to label crime thrillers with a revolver dingbat on the spine. The rotary printing press with its revolving cylinders represents a milestone in the evolution of producing newspapers, books and other mass media. And last but not least, the Spanish revolver can mean “to stir, to mix up”, which is a perfect motto for the foundry’s program. At Revolver Type, we like to mix historical motifs and contemporary vision, combine them with state-of-the-art technology, and fuse them into forceful fonts. Made with love – no guns involved. On that note, our name is meant figuratively, we have nothing to do with firearms. We do not support gun enthusiasts, organisations that promote the use of guns or the arms trade at large.
